Depression Therapy and Support in Toronto

Feeling sadness, disappointment, or grief is a normal part of being human. These emotions often come in response to life events and tend to shift with time. When low mood persists, starts to feel overwhelming, and begins affecting daily functioning, it may indicate depression.

Depression can involve hopelessness, fatigue, reduced motivation, and loss of interest in activities or relationships. There is no single cause. Depression can develop from a mix of biological factors, personal history, stress, trauma, and ongoing life pressures. Depression is treatable, and therapy can help you reduce symptoms, improve daily functioning, and rebuild a sense of stability.

At The Cohen Clinic, we provide therapy for adults in Toronto experiencing depression, including people who feel stuck in low mood, people who are coping with difficult life changes, and people who want structured support to move forward.

What Is Depression?

Depression is more than “feeling down.” It is a mental health condition that can affect mood, thoughts, energy, and behaviour over time. It may show up as persistent sadness, emptiness, irritability, or emotional numbness, along with physical and cognitive changes that make daily life feel harder than it used to.

Depression can range from mild to severe. For some people, it comes and goes. For others, it lasts for months or longer without support.

Types of Depression

Depression can appear in different forms, with overlapping symptoms and different patterns over time.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD)

Major depression involves persistently low mood and/or loss of interest in usual activities, alongside emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms that last at least two weeks and affect functioning.

Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) or Dysthymia

PDD is a longer-lasting form of depression (often two years or more). Symptoms may feel less intense than major depression, but they can be draining because of their duration.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder includes periods of depression and periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania). During depressive episodes, symptoms can closely resemble major depression.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

SAD is depression that occurs during certain seasons, often in the winter months. Symptoms can include low energy, sleep and appetite changes, weight gain, and social withdrawal.

Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression can occur after childbirth and involves symptoms that go beyond the typical “baby blues.” It can affect mothers and, in some cases, fathers, and may include low mood, irritability, numbness, bonding difficulties, and intrusive or distressing thoughts.

How Therapy Can Help with Depression

Therapy provides a structured, non-judgmental space to understand what is maintaining depression and to build practical strategies that support change.

Understanding Maintaining Patterns

A therapist can help you identify:

Factors that reinforce low mood

Unhelpful thought patterns and self-criticism
Avoidance and withdrawal that reduce positive experiences
Chronic stress, burnout, or unresolved emotional pain

Evidence-Based Approaches

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT helps you recognize and challenge thinking patterns that worsen depression and build actions that support improved mood and functioning.

Behavioural activation and routine-building

Therapy can support you in gradually increasing activities that improve mood and reduce isolation.

Support for relationships and life transitions

Therapy can help with communication, boundaries, grief, identity shifts, and difficult life changes that may be contributing to depression.

Practical Skills for Day-to-Day Coping

Therapy can include:

Tools to improve emotional regulation and stability

Strategies to manage rumination and negative thought loops
