Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

About Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)

  • CPT treatment was specifically designed to help individuals suffering from trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Similarly to CBT, CPT emphasizes the idea that what we think affects how we feel and act. After experiencing a traumatic event(s), our cognitive processing (i.e. thinking) can be deeply impacted. While trying to cope with the trauma, the body and mind may develop unhelpful beliefs and behaviours that can cause devastating effects to one’s self-esteem, trust in others/self, relationships, and feelings of safety.
  • CPT may be an effective treatment modality for individuals who experience all or some of the following symptoms:
    • Nightmares and Difficulty Sleeping

    • Panic Attacks

    • Intense Flashbacks

    • Intrusive Thoughts

    • Feeling Constantly “On Edge” and/or Easily Startled

    • Low Self-Esteem

    • Depression

    • Anxiety

  • CPT treatment is a trauma-focused approach that is designed to help individuals challenge and reframe their existing beliefs about their trauma. This treatment can help people reprocess a traumatic event, confront and challenge long-held beliefs and assumptions about their trauma, and find ways to think differently about the trauma and themselves in order to move forward in their lives.
