Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is one of the most researched, widely used approaches for anxiety, depression, and everyday stress.

Struggling with focus, organization, or restlessness that never seems to let up? For many adults, years of missed deadlines, forgotten details, and feeling “behind” have a name — and an answer.
Anxiety is part of being human, but it can start to take over when it becomes constant, intense, or hard to control.

Getting a formal autism assessment as an adult (18+) can be a significant step. For many people, it brings clarity after years of feeling different, misunderstood, or simply exhausted by experiences others seem to navigate with ease.

Depression is more than feeling sad. It can settle in quietly and make even the simplest tasks feel out of reach.
Obsessive-compulsive disorder can feel relentless. Intrusive thoughts, compulsive rituals, and cycles of doubt can consume hours of your day and leave you exhausted, ashamed, or stuck.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a structured, evidence-informed therapy for trauma and distressing memories.
Attachment-based therapy is grounded in attachment theory, which emphasizes how early relationships, especially with primary caregivers, shape emotional development, trust, and connection with others.
At The Cohen Clinic, we focus on the mind-body connection to help manage mental health holistically. Our approach is based on the idea that practicing different ways of being can lead to positive changes in the brain and overall well-being.
The Cohen Clinic offers a range of professionals, including clinical psychologists, social workers, and a naturopathic doctor. One of our registered dietitians is also a registered psychotherapist with expertise in body image concerns, eating disorders, gut health, and health anxiety.

Reaching out for support is difficult. We often struggle to confide in friends or family, never mind meet with a stranger to discuss our thoughts and feelings. Therapy holds a lot of unknowns for people who have never had any interaction with the field of mental health. This is what you can expect from an intake appointment:
The initial session is about the therapist gaining an understanding about you and your needs. The point is to make sure the therapist and client are the best fit for treatment. They want to gain an understanding of what is bringing you to therapy, your current symptoms and your background history. If the therapist believes you are better suited to a different course of treatment, they will connect you to a treatment provider who specializes in your needs.
This appointment is also an opportunity for you to assess how comfortable you feel. Research shows, rapport between client and therapist is a significant factor in treatment success.
The therapeutic relationship is like any relationship – sometimes it’s a match and sometimes it’s not. If you do not feel the therapist is the right fit for you, then they will provide you with referrals for someone who meets your needs better. This being said, it also takes time to build comfort, so if you feel your relationship can grow, give it some time.
Sessions are 50 minutes in length. Frequency is dependent on the unique needs of each client, taking into account symptom severity, level of distress, availability, and financial constraints. It is usually best practice to have sessions once per week or every two weeks at the start of treatment.
Research shows therapy duration is extremely variable. Short-term models (for specific difficulties) are approximately 4 to 10 sessions. Long-term models (for recurring life patterns) are approximately 12 to 20 sessions. Session frequency and duration will be discussed collaboratively with your therapist throughout treatment.
We are Registered Clinical Psychologists and therefore do not prescribe medication. We respect each client’s decision to use or not use mental health medication. Your Family Doctor or Psychiatrist can prescribe medication. We are always happy to consult with them — with your expressed written consent.
Video and telephone sessions are available for those in need. A PHIPA-compliant video conferencing application is used. Please note, as per the guidelines of the College of Alberta Psychologists, we can only treat clients currently residing in Alberta.
Workshops are skills-based, interactive sessions offered in Calgary and surrounding areas. Evening and weekend sessions are available.
Things to note regarding workshops:
